Formatting DVDs – How to Format DVD in Windows Easily

DVD discs are an effective storage device because they are less prone to failure than hard drives. DVD-RW discs allow you to format and rewrite data multiple times, as the name suggests, RW stands for Rewrite. This allows you to transfer or save files using DVD-RW again and again. Before "rewriting" a DVD-RW, you should erase the data already on the disc for reuse. This process also allows you to reformat the disc, which can also change how and where you're able to use it based on your data needs. The process of erasing and formatting DVD RW is fairly simple. Step 1: Insert the DVD RW into the DVD drive of your computer. Wait a few seconds to let the disc load.

Step 2: Click Computer. Click your disk drive's icon.

Step 3: Right-click on the DVD-RW icon. In the toolbar, click “Format” and follow the instructions.

Step 4: Select a file system. Click the "File system" drop-down box, then click one of the following file systems:

UDF 1.50 - For use on XP and older.

UDF 2.00 - For use on XP and older.

UDF 2.01 (default) - Usable with most current operating systems.

UDF 2.50 - Usable with most current operating systems and support Blu-ray.

Step 5: Click "Start", then click "OK". Doing so will begin formatting DVDs for your selected file system.

Step 6: Click "OK" when prompted. This will start to format compact discs.

Step 1: Insert the rewritable disc into your computer's CD, DVD, or Blu-ray Disc burner.

Step 2: Click "Start" > "Computer" > "Windows Explorer" then click the DVD icon. This will pull up the DVD burner software. In the toolbar, click "Erase this disc" and follow the instructions.

Step 3: Access the "Burn files to disc" window. This appears when you either insert a blank disc or double-click the blank disc in the computer window.

Step 4: Enter a name for the disc. Then, select the format you want to use.

Step 5: Once you've selected your formatting method, the drive will prepare the disc.

Step 6: After it's finished, you'll be able to start adding files to the disc.
