MPEG-4 is an extensive set of key enabling technology specifications with audio and video at its core. It was defined by the MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group) committee, the working group within the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specified the widely adopted. MPEG-4 absorbs many of the features of MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 and other related standards, adding new features. MPEG-4, whose formal designation is ISO/IEC 14496, was finalized in October 1998 and became an international standard in early 1999.
MPEG-4 has recently been adopted into a number of company products, including for example the PlayStation Portable, iPod, the Nero Digital product suite, Mac OS X v10.4, many cell phones, as well as HD DVD and Blu-ray discs.
