[WLMP File Player] How to Play WLMP File on Windows 10?

WLMP is the movie project file format used by Microsoft Windows Movie Maker (known as Windows Live Movie Maker for the 2009 and 2011 releases). A WLMP file doesn’t contain actual audio and video files but project-related details such as the location or duration of the file, the applied transitions and effects, etc. Therefore, the WLMP file is unable to open with a regular player or video editing software. To play WLMP file on Windows 10, Windows Movie Maker is the only solution.

If you want to view the WLMP file on a PC or phone, you need to convert WLMP to a format that can be supported by regular players like VLC media player or PotPlayer.

Microsoft officially released Windows Movie Maker as a standalone product through the Windows Essentials software suite in 2009 but stopped its support on January 10, 2017.

Now, to play WLMP file on Windows 10, launch Windows Movie Maker, and from the top-left nav bar, hit File and choose Open project. Then select the target WLMP file and click Open to import it into the WLMP file player.

You can continue to edit the project file using the only .wlmp player or convert the project file format to a standard video format like WMV or MP4. Here are the steps:

Step 1. After importing the WLMP file into Windows Movie Maker, go to File > Save movie at the top menu bar.

Step 2. Then based on your actual needs, you can choose to export the video to devices like Android, iPhone, Windows PC, etc., email, websites, and more. Otherwise, you just choose the recommended settings.

Step 3. At last, hit the Save as type to output a WMV video or MP4 video. Create a new name for the file and press Save to export the video from the imported WLMP project files.

As you can tell, Windows Movie Maker is the only WLMP file player and converter. If you need to play WLMP file on Windows 10, reinstalling the old application is the only solution.
