It’s worth noting that 3GPP2 (3rd Generation Partnership Project 2) and 3GPP are competitors. 3GPP is primarily associated with GSM-based networks while 3GPP2 focuses on CDMA technology, particularly CDMA2000.

Files created based on specifications defined by the 3GPP project are 3GPP multimedia files. Those files typically use the extension .3gp and some may have the .mp4 extension. A 3GPP multimedia file stores video streams as H.263 or MPEG-4 Part 2 and stores audio streams as AMR or AAC.
